This is an ancient solar chart found in history books on Hyneria. As you can see, the elliptical orbit brings (or brought) the plant very close to the sun twice in a Hynerian cycle, and thus created the "children of the shells." :-)
No, you are right, that is what it is, I'm sure of it. And somewhere there is a historical building, or even a private home, where this has been painted on the ceiling precisely as it is here, in those wonderful golden colours and anyone who sees it cannot help but stand and stare in wonder. In otehr words, it's a very pretty fractal. :-)
